Ten pics, Nine Photographers, Two sections

Before I start this post, please note the addition of a second slide show - the number of pics on the blog are now split into two. See slide show instructions.

Today's post, 28th February 2012, is a large one and features ten pics from nine photographers, including a new contributor.  A warm welcome to Ieuan Wood, our 35th contributor.

WINWICK

First up is Alan Rigby's shot of EWS (DBS) class 60, 60065 Spirit of Jaguar, on an engineeers' working, southbound through Winwick, on 19th February 2012.

** This shot qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

Next is a shot from Jeff Nicholls, pic number two. Featured is EWS (DBS) class 67, 67017, crossing the Mersey Bridge heading south, light engine, on 3rd February 2012.

** This shot qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

Pic number three is from John Smith. Freightliner 'HeavyHaul' class 70, 70010, is shown heading a coal working close to the junction at Winwick, on 25th November 2011.

The fourth pic in this section has been sent in by Bevan Price. Grand Central HST (power cars 43465 and 43467) passed through Winwick, southbound, on 20th February 2012. The working was empty carriage stock from Heaton to Crewe.

** This shot qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS

Geoff Monks has contributed the first pic in this section, pic number five overall. Welsh Highland Railway 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 Garratt 'K1' is pictured between Snowdon Ranger and Rhyd Ddu, on 27th March 2008. Snowdon summit is to the left.

Pic number six is from Matthew Chambers. A couple of posts ago I used Matthew's shot of a Network Rail Test Train standing at Wigan Wallgate, with class 73s front and back. 73138 was in that pic and 73107 is shown here, photographed from the opposite end of the train, also at night. The pic is dated 14th February 2012.

** This shot qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

A recent visit to a large model railway exhibition in Glasgow enabled Alan Rigby the chance to photograph some of the trains at Central Station. Pic number seven shows 'ScotRail' class 380, 380 012, standing in the station. The class 180 emus are part of the Siemens 'Desiro' UK family of designs that includes classes 185 and 350.

** This shot qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

Pic number eight has been sent in by Barry Rigby. EWS (DBS) class 60, 60024, is depicted arriving at Peak Forest with an empty Northwich - Tunstead Quarry working, on 8th February 2012. Note the mix of snow and stone dust covering the ground.

** This shot qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

The ninth shot features the ex L&YR class '25',  0-6-0 tender loco No.957, (BR No, 52044) built by Beyer Peacock in Manchester in 1887. It is heading some wonderful ex L&YR passenger carriages (8-wheel and 6-wheel). According to the L&YR Trust website, the carriages are appointed with 'lake' (purple brown) lower panels, 'saddle' (light brown) upper panels and 'umber' (chocolate brown) window surrounds. The picture was taken by David Quayle at Keighley on the K&WVR on 12th February 2012.

** This shot qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'

The tenth and final shot is from new contributor, Ieuan Wood. The famous ELR 'Super D' 0-8-0 tender locomotive, No. 49395, is shown at Bury (?). The ex L&NWR class G locos of Charles Bowen-Cooke were known as 'Super Ds' because many were rebuilds of George Whale's earlier class 'D' 0-8-0s. The pic is dated 21st January 2012.

The 'Pic of the Month, January 2012' competition ends tomorrow - midnight February 29th. Please vote if you haven't already. All qualifying pictures (dated January 2012) entered between 1st Jan and 8th Feb, 2012, are highlighted in yellow on each page posted between those dates, to make it easier for you. Winwick Area 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Alternatives (UK and World) 1st, 2nd and 3rd, please.

Don't vote in the February competition until after March 7th. There has been concern raised that pics taken at the end of any month are disadvantaged as there is little chance of them appearing on the blog in that month. So, I will give 1 week's 'grace' at the end of each month to allow me to try and place such pics on the blog. Qualifying pics must be dated in the appropriate month, however.

Jeff Nicholls supplies the pic for this section, taken in Poland on 2nd October 2008. The electric loco is EP07 1051 standing at Wroclaw station. Diesels, Electrics and Steam

Nine more pics for today's post, 23rd February 2012, covering all three sections.

WINWICK

Pic numbers one and two are from Bob McClellan and touch a subject I have covered to a small degree in previous posts. Class 60, 60007 has appeared in several guises over the years and here is an old Load Haul livery example to compare with the modern DBS equivalent. The location for both pics is the line from Walton Junction to Latchford. The first shows 60007 in Load Haul livery on 13th January 2005.

Bob's second pic shows 60007 in its latest DBS red livery. It carries the logo 'Switch on to Safety' and is named Spirit of Tom Kendell. The naming ceremony was carried out on 7th September 2011 at a private ceremony at Knottingley Depot in remembrance of the young engineer Tom Kendell, who died in a tragic accident. This pic is dated 15th February 2012.

** This pic qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

Pic number three, taken on 19th February 2012, is from Alan Rigby. Shown is EWS (DBS) class 66, 66139, crossing the arches by the entrance to the EWS/DBS depot on Slutchers Lane. The working was engineers wagons.

** This pic qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

Next is another shot of the Class 86, 86259 Les Ross, taken at Bank Quay on 11th February 2012. This loco was certainly popular with photographers as it worked the winter 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' railtours in February. The photographer was Matthew Chambers.

** This pic qualifies for Winwick Area 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

Pic number five is from Jeff Nicholls. A pair of EWS/DBS class 90s, 90018 and 90036, are shown crossing the Mersey with EWS/DBS class 92, 92003 Beethoven, visible in the background with a china clay working. An unusual shot with three electric locos. The shot is dated 25th January 2012

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS

First up, pic number six overall, is one of David Quayle's shots from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The two main locos in the picture are 43924 and 41241. In September 1968, ex LMS class '4F' 0-6-0 of Henry Fowler, No 43924, became the first locomotive ever to be rescued from a scrapyard, the famous Woodham Bros in  Barry, South Wales. No. 43924 was overhauled and  re-entered revenue-earning passenger service on the K&WVR in July 2011. Small tank engine 41241 is a BR class '2MT', 2-6-0 which entered service in BR days, 1949, to a H.G. (George) Ivatt design. David's shot is dated 12th February 2012.

** This pic qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

** This pic qualifies for Alternative Pics 'Pic of the Month, February 2012'.

ALTERNATIVE WORLD PICS

Pic number nine, the only shot in this section is from Jeff Nicholls. The location is Lucca in Italy. The loco on display at the side of the road is 2-8-2, No.940 1002, which is pushed back into the tunnel behind, in winter.
