Fog and Snow at the ELR

Today's post, 21st January 2015, comprises eighteen pics from five contributors, including several taken at the recent winter Gala at the East Lancashire Railway.


Jeff Nicholls is first up with his shots from a murky ELR. First is the ex GWR Collett 0-6-2 tank engine No.5643, light engine,  taken at Ramsbottom on 19th January 2015.

Next is Jeff's shot of ex BR 'Standard' class '4' 2-6-4, No.80080, leaving Summerseat with a Heywood - Rawtenstall service. The pic is dated 19th January 2015.

The third shot from Jeff was taken from the guards van on a demonstration freight train hauled by No.5643 again. The class 40 in the pic is D335 (40135). The date was 19th January 2015.

Jeff's last pic shows the Gresley class 'K4' 2-6-0, No.61994 The Great Marquess, arriving at Irwell Vale in a snow covered landscape. The service was Heywood - Rawtenstall and the date, 19th January 2015.

Alan Rigby has sent in the following four pics all taken on his recent visit to Yorkshire. First up is GBRf class 66, 66740 Sarah taken at Burn level crossing on 19th January 2015. The working was Selby - Felixstowe.

Next is a shot of GBRf class 66, 66725 SUNDERLAND taken at Sudforth Lane. The working was Tyne Dock - Drax biomass and the date, 19th January 2015.

The third shot from Alan is of Freightliner class 66, 66621, at Whitley Bridge Station on 19th January 2015.

Next, from Alan, is GBRf class 66, 66703 Doncaster PSB 1981-2002, taken at Whitley Bridge Station on 19th January 2015. The working was Doncaster Decoy - Drax.

The next two shots are from Ieuan Wood. GBRf class 66, 66749 is up first on a Tuebrook - Ironbridge working. The location was Lea Green and the date, 18th January 2015.

This one, from Ieuan again,  features GBRf class 66, 66708 Jayne, on a Northwich - LBT move. The location was Rainhill and the date, 11th January 2015.

David Wood has sent in the next three pics. His first was taken at Arpley on 13th January 2015 and shows diesel shunter class 08, 08632 and DBS class 60, 60100.

David's second shot was taken at Acton Bridge on 29th December 2014. Depicted is Freightliner class 90, 90049 with a container working.

The third shot from David was also taken at Acton Bridge on the same date, 29th December 2014. Pictured is GBRf class 66, 66753 on an Ironbridge working.

The final five shots in this post are from David Quayle. First up is a shot from Irwell Vale taken on 18th January 2015. Two locos are pictured ex L&YR class '27', 0-6-0 tender locomotive, of John Aspinall No.12322 (BR 52322) and ex LMS Hughes/Fowler 2-6-0 'Crab', No.13065 (BR 42765).

Next is a pic of two Stanier 'Black Fives' No's 44871 and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier at Bury on 18th January 2015. The bunker of Collett 0-6-2 tank No.5643 is pictured on the left.

Ex LMS Hughes/Fowler 2-6-0 'Crab', No.13065 (BR 42765) is pictured next at the signal gantry at Ramsbottom on 18th January 2015.

Ex L&YR class '27', 0-6-0 tender locomotive, No.12322 (BR 52322) is pictured again, this time at Bury on the same date, 18th January 2015.

David's fifth and final pic from his visit to the ELR features ex LNER class 'K4' of Nigel Gresley, No.61994 The Great Marquess. The location was Bury and the date, 18th January 2015.

First Pics of the New Year.

Here we go again. It seems a long time ago (10th March 2010) since we began our blog and we are still going strongly. Many thanks to everyone who have contributed and to all our viewers. Today's post, 9th January 2015, comprises fourteen pics from five contributors.


Up first is our most frequent contributor (I don't know what we would do without him...) Jeff Nicholls. His first shot is of the Arpley diesel shunter, 09016, at Bridge Foot over the Mersey on 3rd January 2015. The shunter is on its way to couple up to the Pathfinder Tours' 'Tugging Shedmaster' train in Latchford Sidings.

Next is a shot of DBS class 60, 60092 passing over the Twelve Arches at the head of the 'Tugging Shedmaster' tour, on its way to Toton. The pic is dated 3rd January 2015.

Jeff's third pic shows double heading Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0s Nos 44871 and 45407 at Winwick with a Southall - ELR move. The pic is dated 24th December 2014.

Pic number four of GBRf class 66, 66753 EMD Roberts Road was taken at Winwick on 24th December 2014. The working was LBT - Ironbridge PS biomass.

Jeff's fifth and final shot (for now) features DBS 'Tug' 60092 parked at Arpley Shed with a red DBS coal hopper alongside. This pic is dated 31st December 2014.

John Smith was also out and about on New Years Eve. He was at Lea Green for DBS class 60, 60020, on a LBT - FFPS coal working. Note that the wiring is in place.

John's second shot was taken on 2nd January 2015 at Collins Green. Depicted is GBRf class 66, 66749 on an Ironbridge PS - LBT empty biomass working. The wires are in place here also.

David Wood has sent in the next pic, showing the double heading 'Black Fives' detailed above. Nos. 44871 and 45407 were pictured at Parkside with the Southall - Bury move. The date was 24th December 2014.

The following four shots are from Alan Rigby. DRS class 68, 68003 and DRS class 37, 37605 are shown at Winwick on 2nd January 2015. The working was Daventry - Motherwell flats.

Next, from Alan, is Fastline Freight liveried class 56, 56301 (ex56045)  on a Chaddeston - Shap Quarry working through Winwick on 8th January 2015. The 56 is owned by 'Class 56 Locomotives'.

The third pic from Alan shows GBRf class 66, 66749 at Winwick with an Ironbridge PS - Tuebrook biomass empties working. The pic is dated 7th January 2105.

Arriva Trains Wales class 67, 67001, is pictured in Alan's fourth shot taken at Winwick on 7th December 2015. The working was Holyhead - Manchester Piccadilly.

The fifth shot from Alan was taken at Winwick on 7th January 2015. WCRC class 37s 37706 and 37668 are pictured on a Southall - Carnforth working.
