Steam Specials

Two steam railtours and steam locos from the recent ELR Gala feature in today's post, 1st August 2013. Fourteen pics from six contributors are included.

WINWICK

First up is Colin Platt's pic of ex BR 'Standard' class '7' 4-6-2, No.70013 Oliver Cromwell on a Southall - Crewe - Castleton Hopwood GF (Bury) move. On the Southall - Crewe leg 70013 was accompanied by Bullied 'BoB' class 4-6-2, No.34067 Tangmere. Both locos had diesel support; 70013 was 'pushed' by WCRC class 47, 47245, from Crewe. The location was Newton-le-Willows Station and the date, 25th July 2013. Code - July W12

Our second pic is from John Smith. John was at St Helens Junction to photograph the Liverpool - Holyhead 'North Wales Coast Express', headed by ex LMS Stanier Black Five 4-6-0, No. 45231 The Sherwood Forester. The pic is dated 28th July 2013.

Colin Platt is first up once again with his pic, number three overall, of ex LMS Stanier 'Princess Coronation' class 4-6-2. No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland heading the Liverpool - Carlisle 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'. The location was Eccleston Park, Prescot and the date, 27th July 2013.

Code - July A19

Pic number four has been sent in by Ieuan Wood. The same Liverpool - Carlisle railtour ('CME') seen in Colin Platt's previous shot is pictured at Carlisle. The date was also the same - 27th July 2013.

Code - July A20

Pic number five is also from Ieuwan and features the North Wales Coast Express' again. This time No.45231 The Sherwood Forester is pictured at Shotton. The pic is dated 28th July 2013.

Code - July A21

David Wood has sent in pic number six. Yet again the 'CME' is featured but at a different location - Thatto Heath Station in St Helens. The date again was 27th July 2013.

Code - July A22

David Quayle has sent in the following four pics all taken at the recent ELR Gala. His first, pic number seven, shows Deltic class 55, D9009 Alycidon, at Ramsbottom on 28th July 2013.

Code - July A23

David's next shot, number eight, features a tribute to the last steam train to run in Britain, in August 1968, 'The Fifteen Guinea Special'. The loco in charge was ex BR 'Standard' class '7', No.70013 Oliver Cromwell. David adds that to create authenticity, the nameplate was removed from the loco and painted on in a style similar to its appearance in 1968.  The train also included two coaches used on the original 'Special'. The nameplate was replaced later in the day. The pic is dated 28th July 2013.   Code - July A24

Pic number nine shows ex LMS Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0, No.45407, masquerading as one of the original 'Fifteen Guinea Special' 'Black Fives', 45110. 'Black Five' 44871, another of the original 'Special' locos, unfortunately broke down at Oxenhope on its way to the ELR and did not take part in the  celebration. David's shot is dated 27th July 2013.   Code - July A25

David's fourth pic, number ten overall, features the ELR resident loco, ex L&NWR class 'G2' 0-8-0, No.49395, (built in 1921). The location is Ramsbottom and the date, 27th July 2013.

Code - July A26

The next shot is from John Smith. Pic eleven shows 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' once again but this time from the rear. Preserved class 47, 47395 County of Essex is pictured on the tail of the CME at Garswood on 27th July 2013.

Code - July A27

The next two shots are from Paul Holland. Number twelve features ex GWR 0-6-0PT No.9681 of the Forest of Dean Railway in monochrome. The location is Norchard Station and the date, 28th July 2012.

Code - July A28

Class 08 diesel shunter is pictured next, pic thirteen, from Paul. D3987 Gladys is pictured at the same location witha Qheen Mary brake van behind. This shot is also dated 28th July 2013.

Code - July A29

The final pic is from David Wood. WCRC Class 57, 57315 is depicted at Ribblehead with 'Lakes and Settle & Carlisle Circular' tour; WCRC class 57, 57313 was on the reat of the train. The date was 27th July 2013.
