Winwick, UK and 'Retros'

This post, 19th December 2012 is a mix of local Winwick area pics, alternatives from other UK locations and more pre 2000 'retro' pics. Seven contributors are represented.

May I also take this opportunity to wish all our contributors, readers/viewers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2013.

First up is Matthew Chambers' shot of double heading Freightliner class 86s - 86628 and 86639 - dragging a Freightliner class 66 (dead in tow), 66589. The working was an intermodal, the location was Bank Quay and the date, 15th December 2012.

Another shot from Matthew, pic number two, features DBS 'Tug' 17 (a regular on this blog at the present time). 60017 is pictured at Arpley Junction with a coal working on 15th December 2012.

60017 is depicted again in pic number three taken at Arpley on the same date, 15th December 2012. Matthew Chambers is the photographer again and the working is coal.

Two pics from Geoff Monks begin this section. The first, pic number number six overall, shows steam loco No.35007 Aberdeen Commonwealth in Weymouth shed on 10th July 1966. The loco is a SR  'Merchant Navy' class 4-6-2, designed by Oliver Bulleid and introduced in 1941.

Pic number seven, from Geoff, features the front end of a SR Merchant Navy 4-6-2 and a BR 'Standard' class 5. They are standing in Nine Elms shed on 19th February 1967.

Pics eight and nine are from David Quayle. Pic number eight is a close up of Leeds Holbeck shed on 10th July 1966. Pictured are LMS Ivatt class '4F' 2-6-0, No. 43130, LMS Fowler class '4P' 2-6-4T, No.42394, and diesel shunter class '04' 0-6-0, D2272. Holbeck was one of Britain's favourite sheds for railway photographers and artists.

Shot number nine, from David, features a huge BR class '9F' 2-10-0, No. 92130, in rust and grime livery, typical of the time. The loco is pictured at Carlisle on 23rd October 1965.

Harry Tranter has supplied pic number ten from his photo library. BR Standard class '4MT' 2-6-0, No.76020, is pictured at Winwick Quay on a goods working in September 1961. Harry adds that the slide film used was Agfachrome CT18.

Pic eleven is from Bevan Price. Taken at Saalfeld in Germany the loco, No.95 0044 8 was photographed on 29th August 1970.

Harry Tranter's second pic, pic number twelve overall, is of a Gresley LNER 'B12' class loco, No.61572, standing in Stratford Works in 1962. The film was Agfachrome.

Voting is slow for the 'Pic of the Month', November 2012 competition. The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow November code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick and Alternatives (UK and World combined). All November dated pics posted between November 8th and December 6th are eligible and have code numbers. My email address is at the top of the blog. Everyone reading this post is eligible to vote, contributor or not. Please vote if you haven't done so already.
