Five More 'Retros'

First of all may I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year with better weather than we have experienced in 2012. I am using just seven pics in today's post, 30th December 2012, as the continued poor weather of late has seriously affected the number of contributions. Five of the seven are also in the 'retro', pre 2000 category.

WINWICK

Pic number one is from Matthew Chambers. DBS class 60, 60019 Port of Grimsby and Immingham, is shown on a coal working at Arpley Junction. The pic is dated 15th December 2012.

Code - December W7

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS

Next up, shot number two, is from Bevan Price. EWS class 60, 60097, is shown on a Roxby- Northenden empty 'binliner' working at  Moorgate Crossing (Uppermill) before the contract passed to Freightliner. The pic, dated 31st May 2006 is from Bevan Price.

'RETRO' PICS - PRE 2000

Pic number three overall is from David Quayle. Class '8F' 2-8-0, No.48281, is pictured on a goods working at Carlisle on 7th August 1965.

Our fourth pic is another from David Quayle. This is a view of Workington Shed on 14th November 1965 - how many loco classes can you recognise?

Yours truly has sent in pic number five taken on my trips to Wolverhampton Stafford Road shed in the early 1960's. My trusty Halina compact camera and FP3 film gave great service during that year when many GWR locos were lined up for scrap in Stafford Road. Outside of the 'scrap line' was double chimney 'Castle' class 4-6-0, No.5036 Lyonshall Castle, ready for service. The pic is dated 1962.

Harry Tranter has provided the next pic, number six, taken at a North East shed, possibly Heaton or Consett, in 1960. Pictured is a 'B16' class 4-6-0 of Vincent Raven (originally NER class 'S3') No.61429.

The seventh shot has been sent in by Jeff Nicholls. It depicts Stanier 'Black Five' No. 45095 on a goods working at Patricroft Station on 3rd January 1967. Jeff took this on a Brownie 44B 127 camera and he recalls that 1/60th, 1/30th and B were the only settings. Good job it was a fine day eh...

Last chance to vote for the 'Pic of the Month', November 2012 competition; voting closes at 2400hrs Tuesday 1st January 2013. The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow November code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick and Alternatives (UK and World combined). Winwick, UK and 'Retros'

This post, 19th December 2012 is a mix of local Winwick area pics, alternatives from other UK locations and more pre 2000 'retro' pics. Seven contributors are represented.

May I also take this opportunity to wish all our contributors, readers/viewers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2013.

Code - December W5

60017 is depicted again in pic number three taken at Arpley on the same date, 15th December 2012. Matthew Chambers is the photographer again and the working is coal.

Dragged 'Silver Bullets'

Today's post comprises six pics from four contributors. As the number of contributions decreases as we approach the end of 2012, in the next post I will use the 'retro' pics stored in the 'bank' for another 20th century post.

WINWICK

Both pics in this section are from Jeff Nicholls and they also show the same working. First up is EWS (DBS) class 66, 66162, dragging a stricken EWS (DBS) class 92, 92036 Bertel Brecht, on the china clay working ('silver bullets') of 12th December 2012. The location was Twelve Arches. Pic number two shows the same working from the rear. The 66 came off at Arpley Yard and the 92 set off on its own again (recovered).

Code - December W3

A Tale of Two 'Tugs'

Todays's post, 30th November 2012, features a picture-story of two DBS 'Tugs', in Arpley Yard.

WINWICK

Pics one and two are from Bob McClellan. The first was taken at Arpley on 27th November 2012 and shows DBS class 60, 60040 The Territorial Army Centenary, (at the rear) parked up with a loaded coal train. It was very close, too close in fact to a junction, and when DBS 'Tug' 60019 Port of Grimsby and Immingham arrived to get onto the adjacent track, 'Tug' 40 had to be reversed a little to allow its classmate through.

Code - November W15

Pic number two of Bob's shows 'Tug' 40 leaving Arpley (for FFPS) after the event. Same date obviously, 27th November 2012.

Code - November W16

DBS 'Tug' 60019 Port of Grimsby and Immingham is shown next in pic number three from Jeff Nicholls. The loco is pictured on the north bank of the River Mersey on 28th November 2012.

Pic number four is from Ieuan Wood and features yet another tug on our patch, 60079, on a coal working at Winwick. Ieuan's pic is dated 21st November 2012.

Code - November W18

EWS (DBS) class 66, 66199, is up next in shot number five from David Wood. The loco is heading a gypsum working through Winwick on 15th November 2012.

 Code - November W19

The early morning 'Tesco Express' is featured next, pic number six from Jeff Nicholls. Now in the hands of DRS, the working was headed by double heading class 66s, 66303 and 66431 . The pic was taken at Red Bank on 12th November 2012.

Code - November W20

The next very special pic has been sent in by Rachel Colvil. When our dear friend and colleague Ray Whitfield passed away in March, a fund was set up to provide a bench in his honour. Rachel has emailed me with two pics of the completed bench which I have montaged into a single shot for the blog.  The location for Ray's bench is Ladywood Green, Westbrook, Warrington. Ray's wife Olive sends her heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated.

The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow October code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick and Alternatives (UK and World combined). All October dated pics posted between October 10th and November 4th are eligible and have code numbers. My email address is at the top of the blog. Everyone reading this post, contributor or not,  is eligible to vote; please do so if you haven't already.

REMEMBER : October was a huge month for the 'Alternative Pics' section with so many Gala shots covered. With this in mind I will use the top two pictures for 'Pic of the Year', Alternatives 2012 from the monthly October competition. This means that at the end of the year thirteen pics will qualify for the Alternatives title rather than twelve.
