Fourteen from GB; Two from Germany

In this post, 28th August 2013, I am using sixteen pics from seven contributors covering locos from England, Wales and Germany.

To the best of my knowledge few pics have been used on the blog of Scottish Railways /Heritage Railways. Surely someone must be in a position to send in some shots.
 
 
WINWICK
 
 
First up are two pics from a new contributor who has supported our competitions and has decided to have a go and place pics on our blog. You are very welcome Mark Tombs. EWS (DBS) class 66, 66114, is shown in pic number one waiting at Bank Quay with a freight working. The pic is dated 19th August 2013.

Mark's second shot was also taken at Bank Quay and features Arriva Trains class 175, 175110, on a Llandudno-Manchester Piccadilly service. This pic is dated 20th July 2013. Keep them coming Mark.

Our fourth pic, featuring double heading DRS locos, is from Jeff Nicholls. Class 37, 37425 is paired with class 57, 57004 on an empty, spent nuclear fuel working from Sellafield. The destination was Crewe, the location was Winwick and the date was 24th August 2013.

Pics five and six are also from Jeff. Pic five features GBRf class 66, 66722 Sir Edward Watkin on a LBT-Ironbridge empty coal working. The location was Bank Quay and the date, 24th August 2013.

The sixth shot shows Freightliner class 66, 66951, beneath an angry sky at Winwick on 21st August 2013. The working was Hunterston - FFPS coal.

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS
 
 
Pic number eight is also from yours truly (I can't remember the last time I has two pics in a post).   This shot was taken at Carr Mill on 27th July 2013. Pictured is a Liverpool - Carlisle steam 'special' the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'. Preserved class 47, 47580 County of Essex is pictured on the tail of the train which was headed by Stanier  'Pacific' No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland. This was the evening, return run to to Liverpool.
 

 
Ieuan Wood has sent in the following two pics both taken at Chorlton on 23rd August 2013. Pic number nine shows double heading Freightliner class 86s, 86605 and 866xx on an intemodal working.

Ieuan's next shot, number ten, features GBRf class 66, 66722 Sir Edward Watkin double heading with GBRf class 66, 66744. The working was container bogies. The pic is dated 23rd August 2013.

Paul Holland has sent in pics eleven and twelve. Both of Paul's shots were taken on 2nd August 2013 on the Welsh Highland Railway. Garrett 2-6-2 + 2-6-2 No.143 is pictured at Carnarfon Harbour Station with empty stock.

Pic thirteen is from David Wood. Two DRS class 20s are pictured, double heading, at Acton Bridge with a spent nuclear fuel working on 17th August 2013. The loco to the fore is 20312.

Stanier 'Princess Coronation' class 4-6-2, No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland is up next, in a second pic from David Wood, number fourteen overall. The location was Eccleston Park and the date, 17th August 2013. The 'special' was the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'.

Both pics in this section are from David Wood following his trip to Germany. The first, pic number fifteen, was taken at Assmannshausen, a town on the Rhine. An intermodal working is headed by electric loco No.ES64 F4 -211 on 15th August 2013.

Mixed Traction from Winwick to Switzerland

As the title aptly describes, this post 21st August 2013, comprises main line steam, diesel and electric traction plus some Swiss and narrow gauge locos for added interest.


WINWICK


The first two pics are from Jeff Nicholls. Pic number one shows the Gresley 'K4' class 2-6-0, No.61994 The Great Marquess traversing the Twelve Arches on 20th August 2013. The railtour was 'The Welsh Mountaineer' from Preston to Blaenau  Ffestiniog and the date, 20th August 2013.

Jeff's second shot features EWS (DBS) class 66, 66039 on a new freight service, Avonmouth Docks - Castle Cement at Clitheroe. The date was 20th August 2013.

Pic number three is from Geoff Monks. EWS (DBS) class 92, 92039 Johann Strauss, is pictured passing under the Warrington Central line at Froghall Lane with a Fridays-only Mossend - Hams Hall intermodal working. On the adjacent line is Freightliner class 66, 66615, with a Hunterston -FFPS coal working. The pic is dated 16th August 2013.

The following two pics are also from Geoff.  Pic number four overall shows EWS (DBS) class 66, 66011 leaving Latchford north side loop on a Garston-Arpley working of empty car transporter wagons. This pic is dated 16th August 2013.

Pic number five is of double heading DRS class 37s. The corresponding email from Geoff got 'lost' in my email library and this pic should have been included last month. Sorry Geoff. The working is Daventry - Coatbridge containers, the location was Winwick and the date, 23rd July 2013.

Colin Platt has sent in pic number six featuring the Thompson 'B1' class 4-6-0 No. 61264 masquerading as No.61002 Impala. The shot was taken at Grosmont on the NYMR on 14th August 2013.

John Smith has sent in the next three pics. Pic number seven was taken at Garswood on 27th July 2013. The Stanier 'Princess Coronation' class 4-6-2, No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland, is pictured heading the Liverpool - Carlisle, 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'.







John's second shot, number eight overall, shows the 0-6-0ST Haulwen at Llewyfn, on the Gwili Railway. The pic is dated 9th July 2013.









Pic number nine, John's third, features a scene from the Bala Lake Railway on 6th July 2013. 0-4-0ST Alice is pictured at Llanuwchllyn.







The 'Duchess' appears again in pic number ten from yours truly. Traversing Carr Mill viaduct on 27th July 2013, the loco was heading the same 'special' as above -  the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'.





On the tail of the 'CME' above, was the 'Stratford 47 Group''- owned class 47, 47580 County of Essex. The 'special' is captured from the tail by David Wood as it speeds through Ribblehead on the same date, 27th July 2013. This is pic number eleven.





David Hennessy has sent in the final pic in this section, number twelve. Class 73, 73210 Selhurst (E6022), is pictured on the ELR at Ramsbottom on 5th July 2013. The loco, in InterCity livery, is based at the Mid Norfolk Railway








ALTERNATIVE WORLD PICS



These are the first world pics for many months. All three are courtesy of Jeff Nicholls following his holiday in Switzerland.



Pic number thirteen shows loco 460-069-7 Weissenstein, at Interlaken Ost Station on 31st July 2013. The service was Interlaken - Bern.








Jeff's next, pic number fourteen was taken at Zweisimmen on 31st July 2013. Depicted is an old (1940's) loco of the Bern - Lotschberg - Simplon Railway Company waiting to push a train to Interlaken.








The final pic in this post, number fifteen from Jeff, shows steam loco No. 15 on the Brienz - Rothorn Railway at Brienz. The pic is dated 30th July 2013.

IT57

The ALTERNATIVE UK PICS section of this post, 15th August 2013, is dominated by the recent re-run of the 'Fifteen Guinea Special' or 'IT57' on 11th August 2013.

 The original IT57 ran on 11th August 1968; the route and locos for each leg were as follows :- Liverpool Lime Street (45110) - Manchester Victoria (70013) - Carlisle (44871 + 44781) - Manchester Victoria (70013) -  Liverpool Lime Street. Three Stanier 'Black Fives' were involved along with a BR 'Standard' class '7'. The IT57 was officially the last mainline steam passenger train to run in the UK. For the 2013 re-run, the locos and legs (steam) were as follows :- Liverpool (45305) - Manchester Piccadilly (70013) - Settle - Carlisle (44932 + 45231) - Manchester Piccadilly (45305) - Liverpool Lime Street. 
 
 
WINWICK

 
First up are four pics from Bob McClellan. Number one features Colas Rail class 56, 56105 on the logs working, passing through Winwick on 2nd August 2013. This was the Fridays-only Ribblehead - Chirk working.

Next, pic number two from Bob, shows WCRC class 57, 57314 on the rear of  'Northern Belle' stock with another WCRC class 57 at the head. The location was Winwick and the date 2nd August 2013. Bob adds that the pic clearly shows the lack of Dellner coupling.

Pic three is the same train but taken in the reverse direction showing WCRC class 57, 57601 at the head. The headboard reads 'Blockade Buster' whatever that is/was; date and location were the same, obviously.

Three pics from Jeff Nicholls now follow. Pic number five overall shows EWS (DBS) class 66, 66004 vertically and expertly framed through a fence at Bank Quay (south bay). The pic is dated 7th August 2013.

Freightliner class 90, 90044 is the subject of this next shot, number six, from Jeff. Pictured at Winwick, the loco is tailing a Glasgow - Wembley 'special' to get Scottish supporters to the England - Scotland football match on 14th August 2013.

Jeff's third shot, number seven overall, features double-heading EWS (DBS) class 92s, 92019 Wagner and 92041 Vaughan Williams at Twelve Arches on 7th August 2013. The load is china clay or not so 'silver bullets' and the second loco is dead in tow.

First up in this section are three pics from Alan Rigby. Pic eight features EWS(DBS) class 92, 92036 Bertol Brecht on an intermodal at Wigan North Western. This pic is dated 9th August 2013.

Colas Rail class 56, 56105 is up next, in shot number nine. The working is the logs again, Ribblehead - Chirk, the date was 9th August 2013 and the location, Wigan North Western.

Alan's third shot, number ten, shows the first of the IT57 'special', taken at Widnes at 11th August 2013.  Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0, No.45305, was at the head for the Liverpool - Manchester leg.

Next up is a superb contrasting pair of pics from Geoff Monks. The first, (left below)  shows the original IT57 headed by Stanier 'Black Five' No.45110 passing through Kenyon Cutting on 11th August 1968. This is pic number eleven.
 
 











By contrast Geoff's second shot, number twelve, (right above) shows the 2013 equivalent taken on the approach to  Birchwood Station. The date was 11th August 2013 and the loco up front was Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0, No.45305.  Code - August A4  

 
Another pic from Geoff is up next, pic number thirteen. Featured is the uniquely liveried GBRf class 92, 92032 IMechE Railway Division, passing through Deansgate on a Trafford Park-Felixstowe intermodal working. This pic is dated 1st August 2013.

The next three shots are all of the 2013, IT57, taken on 11th August 2013. First up, number fourteen, shows the 'special' taken at Hough Green, Widnes by Ieuan Wood - 45305 at the head.

Pic sixteen is one of a pair from Jeff Nicholls. IT57 again with 45305, but this time at Glazebrook. Jeff adds that this was probably the first steam train on this ex CLC line for nearly fifty years.

Pic eighteen and nineteen are July shots from David Quayle. The ELR celebrated IT57 at the end of July with 'Black Five' 455407 masquerading as the original IT57 'Black Five', 45110. This shot shows 45110 at Irwell Vale on 28th July 2013.
 






The final pic, number nineteen, shows the other loco in the IT57, ELR celebration, 'Standard' class '7' No.70013 Oliver Cromwell. The date was the same, 28th July 2013 and the location, Burrs Country Park.
