IT57

The ALTERNATIVE UK PICS section of this post, 15th August 2013, is dominated by the recent re-run of the 'Fifteen Guinea Special' or 'IT57' on 11th August 2013.

The original IT57 ran on 11th August 1968; the route and locos for each leg were as follows :- Liverpool Lime Street (45110) - Manchester Victoria (70013) - Carlisle (44871 + 44781) - Manchester Victoria (70013) -  Liverpool Lime Street. Three Stanier 'Black Fives' were involved along with a BR 'Standard' class '7'. The IT57 was officially the last mainline steam passenger train to run in the UK. For the 2013 re-run, the locos and legs (steam) were as follows :- Liverpool (45305) - Manchester Piccadilly (70013) - Settle - Carlisle (44932 + 45231) - Manchester Piccadilly (45305) - Liverpool Lime Street.

WINWICK

First up are four pics from Bob McClellan. Number one features Colas Rail class 56, 56105 on the logs working, passing through Winwick on 2nd August 2013. This was the Fridays-only Ribblehead - Chirk working.

Code - August W1

Next, pic number two from Bob, shows WCRC class 57, 57314 on the rear of  'Northern Belle' stock with another WCRC class 57 at the head. The location was Winwick and the date 2nd August 2013. Bob adds that the pic clearly shows the lack of Dellner coupling.

Code - August W2

Pic three is the same train but taken in the reverse direction showing WCRC class 57, 57601 at the head. The headboard reads 'Blockade Buster' whatever that is/was; date and location were the same, obviously.

Code - August W3

Bob's fourth pic is of EWS (DBS) class 66, 66112 on an intermodal working through Winwick on 2nd August 2013.

Three pics from Jeff Nicholls now follow. Pic number five overall shows EWS (DBS) class 66, 66004 vertically and expertly framed through a fence at Bank Quay (south bay). The pic is dated 7th August 2013.

Freightliner class 90, 90044 is the subject of this next shot, number six, from Jeff. Pictured at Winwick, the loco is tailing a Glasgow - Wembley 'special' to get Scottish supporters to the England - Scotland football match on 14th August 2013.

Code - August W6

Jeff's third shot, number seven overall, features double-heading EWS (DBS) class 92s, 92019 Wagner and 92041 Vaughan Williams at Twelve Arches on 7th August 2013. The load is china clay or not so 'silver bullets' and the second loco is dead in tow.

Alan's third shot, number ten, shows the first of the IT57 'special', taken at Widnes at 11th August 2013.  Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0, No.45305, was at the head for the Liverpool - Manchester leg.

Next up is a superb contrasting pair of pics from Geoff Monks. The first, (left below)  shows the original IT57 headed by Stanier 'Black Five' No.45110 passing through Kenyon Cutting on 11th August 1968. This is pic number eleven.

By contrast Geoff's second shot, number twelve, (right above) shows the 2013 equivalent taken on the approach to  Birchwood Station. The date was 11th August 2013 and the loco up front was Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0, No.45305.  Code - August A4

Another pic from Geoff is up next, pic number thirteen. Featured is the uniquely liveried GBRf class 92, 92032 IMechE Railway Division, passing through Deansgate on a Trafford Park-Felixstowe intermodal working. This pic is dated 1st August 2013.

The next three shots are all of the 2013, IT57, taken on 11th August 2013. First up, number fourteen, shows the 'special' taken at Hough Green, Widnes by Ieuan Wood - 45305 at the head.

Pic sixteen is one of a pair from Jeff Nicholls. IT57 again with 45305, but this time at Glazebrook. Jeff adds that this was probably the first steam train on this ex CLC line for nearly fifty years.

 Code - August A8

Jeff's next, pic seventeen, shows the 'Standard' class '7', 4-6-2 No.70013 Oliver Cromwell on the IT57 at Kearsley.

Pic eighteen and nineteen are July shots from David Quayle. The ELR celebrated IT57 at the end of July with 'Black Five' 455407 masquerading as the original IT57 'Black Five', 45110. This shot shows 45110 at Irwell Vale on 28th July 2013.

The final pic, number nineteen, shows the other loco in the IT57, ELR celebration, 'Standard' class '7' No.70013 Oliver Cromwell. The date was the same, 28th July 2013 and the location, Burrs Country Park.

Voting is underway for the 'Pic of the Month', July 2013 competition. The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow July code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick, and Alternatives (UK and World combined). All July dated pics posted between 16th July and 1st August are eligible, and have code numbers. My email address is at the top of the blog. Everyone, contributors or not, can vote.
