Four from Winwick; Ten Alternatives

Today, 28th October 2012, we have just passed 70,000 hits for our blog and are now averaging over 3,000 hits per month; not bad going considering we began less than three years ago. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed and especially to our readers/viewers. In today's post I am using another fourteen pics contributed by eight photographers; once again, text is kept to a minimum to save on space.

Unfortunately, I have to wait again for a convenient gap in our posts to continue with our 'retro' pre-2000 theme, but these pics are safe in a  separate 'bank' and some will be used soon. Please be patient if you have contributed.

A Score of Pics

This is the largest post I have put together since we began this blog in January 2010. Today, 23rd October 2012, I am using twenty ( a 'score') pics from nine contributors. Some of the latter have sent in many pics, mainly from recent Galas, so they are well represented. Because of the huge number of pics the text will be kept to a minimum. If more info is required about any loco pictured, please use the search bar at the top of the blog for previous picture legends.

Many thanks to those who have sent in pre-2000 pics for our 'retro' features - there will be more totally 'retro' posts as soon as I have suitable gaps between normal posts.

Old Alder Lane Update

Posted 17th October 2012. Many of us have received a  letter and related map from Warrington Borough Council re the 'access only' prohibition for Old Alder Lane. The Council, in trying to reach an amicable solution, have intimated that they may be willing to amend the initial proposal.

There would be no prohibition on 'our patch' i.e. from Watery Lane/Mill Lane  to the access to Sankey Valley Park at the first bend  - the restriction would apply to the remaining section of Old Alder Lane towards The Fiddle in' Bag pub. A positive reply to the proposal would satisfy our photographic requirements even though I cannot possibly see how the problems of anti-social behaviour and fly tipping would be overcome.  Also, according to the letter received, the recipient's positive reply would negate his/her  formal objection to the initial prohibition.

The final date for receipt of the formal reply, in a pre-paid envelope, is October 31st. Initial reactions only,  indicate a positive response.

20th Century Snapshots

Today's post, 14th October 2012, is a little different. Following my request in the previous post for 'retro' pics, pre-1990, I have received many examples. Therefore, this is the very first post totally dedicated to pics taken in the 20th century;  also, I will use December 31st 1999 as the cut off point from now on. All the pics are the results of digital scans or digital copying.

RETROSPECTIVE UK PICS

First up are a couple of pics from Geoff Monks, who won the 'Photograph of the Year' competition last year. The first shows IOM Railway No.12, Hutchinson, at Oakhill near the top of the long climb out of Douglas. The loco in the pic, a 2-4-0T, was built by Beyer Peacock  in 1908. The passenger train was photographed on Kodachrome 25 on 25th April 1984 and the slide was scanned. The coal quality looks a bit suspect.

Geoff's second pic, also produced in a similar way, features ex GWR 2-6-2T 'Prairie' tank, No.4566, emerging from Foley Park tunnel on the Severn Valley Railway. The service was a Christmas 'Santa Special' from Kidderminster. The pic is dated 6th December 1986.

The third pic has been sent in by David Wood. Taken on 29th July 1976 two mainline diesels are pictured at Shrewsbury Station. They are BR class 37, 37158 and BR class 25, 25041.

Jeff Nicholls has supplied the next couple of pics. Two class 56s are shown in the first, 56131 and 56018 (which resided at Arpley until recently). The location was Culcheth, the working was Stanlow - Jarrow 'hot oil' tanks and the date, 18th May 1984.

Jeff's second shot depicts two class 37s on a Widnes- Earles Siding, cement empties working. The location was the Bank Quay low level line and the date, 26th April 1983. The BR locos were 37134 and 37139.

The following two pics are part of my own BR, WR collection of monochrome prints taken around Wolverhampton, Birmingham Snow Hill and Shrewsbury in 1962. The camera was a Halina 35mm compact and the film, FP3. The prints were digitally copied last year. I didn't realise it at the time but I was photographing lines of locos awaiting the dreaded 'cutter's torch'. The first pic depicts a double chimney 'Castle' class 4-6-0, No. 7014 Caerhays Castle, standing in Wolverhampton Oxford Road shed.

My second pic, taken in the same year, shows 'King' class 4-6-0 No.6001 King Edward VII, standing at Wolverhampton Low Level Station by the signal box. Both of these locos were designed by Charles Collett but greatly influenced by his predecessor, G. J. Churchward.

The final four pics are part of a huge batch sent in by David Quayle. The first shows BR, (ER) Gresley class 'A4' No.60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, the 100th 'Pacific (4-6-2) designed by the great man. It was built in 1937, for the LNER. The other loco in the pic, taken at Carlisle Kingmoor shed on 1st April 1967, (I'm not kidding), is BR class '9F', 2-10-0, No.92056. This class was designed by Robert Riddles.

Next, from David, is an ex GWR 'Warship' class diesel hydraulic loco, D867 Zenith. The maroon loco was photographed at Paddington Station on 8th July 1967.

David's third pic is of BR (MR) Stanier 4-6-0 'Jubilee' class loco, No.45697 Achilles. The location was Carlisle and the date, 4th December 1965. This loco was built for the LMS in 1936.

Finally, pic number eleven is the fourth from David. BR class EM2, of  1.5kV DC, co-co electric locomotives, was built by Metropolitan-Vickers in 1953-54 for use on the Manchester - Sheffield line, through the famous Woodhead Tunnel. Pictured is one of the class, No.27005 Minerva, at Guide Bridge (Tameside, Greater Manchester). The pic is dated 13th July 1967.

Voting has started for the 'Pic of the Month', September 2012 competition. The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow September code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick and Alternatives (UK and World combined). All September dated pics posted between September 4th and October 4th are eligible and have code numbers. My email address is at the top of the blog. Everyone reading this post is eligible to vote, contributor or not.
