Many of you have sent in emails expressing your deep sorrow with respect to Ray Whitfield's passing (see previous post). It is obvious that Ray touched the hearts of us all. He was the most well known of the Winwick personalities, an extremely popular man and a sad loss to everyone who knew him.
I know that Ray would like us to carry on with the work that we have started with the blog so - today's post, 6th April 2012, comprises thirteen (yes another thirteen ) pics and I post them all in memory of Ray and his beloved Winwick.
WINWICK
First up, pic number one, is a double heading, light engine pair of DRS class 20s, 20312 and 20304, passing Warrington Road near Golborne (off the East Lancs Road) on 26th March 2012. John Smith has posted this one.

Geoff Monks has sent in shot number six, of the superb Furness Railway 0-4-0 tender locomotive, No.20, taken at the Ribble Steam Railway, Preston on 1st April 2012. I believe the livery was 'Indian Red' and it is very striking. No.20 is the oldest working standard gauge loco in the UK (built in 1863) and is owned by the Furness Railway Trust. I wouldn't fancy being in that cab in bad weather though.

The recent Severn Valley Railway Gala is featured next, shot number seven. Hampton Loade is the location for Colin Platt's pic of ex GWR small 'Prairie' 2-6-2, No.5164, heading a passenger working. The pic is dated 23rd March 2012

Pic number eight has been sent in by Bevan Price - the Chasewater Railway Gala, of 18th March 2012, is represented here. Pictured are Bass No.5 (Baguley 3027 of 1939), Colin McAndrew (Barclay 1223 of 1911), No.2 (Bagnall 2842 of 1946) and Linda (Bagnall 2648 of 1941). These little industrial tank locos always exude dense clouds of steam and exhaust for photographers.

Ken Young has sent in pic number nine, taken at Crewe on 29th March 2012. It is a close up of Stanier 'Princess Coronation' class 4-6-2, No 46233 Duchess of Sutherland.

Track refurbishment, prior to electrification of the Liverpool - Wigan line, can be seen clearly in Bob McClellan's shot taken at Bryn on 31st March 2012. Two EWS (DBS) class 66s, 66024 and 66xxx are shown with engineers' workings.

The competition for 'Pic of the Month, March 2012' is now open. All March dated, qualifying pics posted between 1st March and today, 6th April, are highlighted in yellow. So, get cracking.... Winwick Area 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Alternatives (UK and World) 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Just give me the pic number, blog post date (not pic date) and photographer for each pic you choose. If you wish to view the pics at better resolution use the first set of instructions in slide show options to the right of the blog. It will be difficult to choose three, especially in the Alternatives section - the standard is so high.
