Today we continue the theme of including photographs taken outside our normal patch. This post, 6th July 2011, comprises four pics from four photographers, taken in four different locations.
The first pic is another shot of an industrial workhorse from John Smith. These little engines, 'puffing and wheezing' around our once great industrial sites, got little recognition during the steam era, losing the 'beauty contest' against the fast and powerful passenger locomotives - Gresley, Stanier and Bullied 'Pacifics' and the 4-6-0s of Charles Collett, to name just a few. However, on current Heritage railways the little 0-4-0s and 0-6-0s (saddle tanks, pannier tanks etc) are revered by true railway enthusiasts. This little 0-4-0 was photographed at the Chasewater Railway Gala on 19th March 2011.
Pic number two is from Alan Rigby and features one of those powerful locomotives described above. Giant 4-6-0 No.6023 King Edward II is pictured on the Mid Norfolk Railway at Thuxton, where the engine was 'running in'. As can be seen, the loco is currently liveried in a darker BR blue ('Oxford' blue?). Opinions please - I don't like it, it's too dark. The pic is dated 5th June 2011.
The next pic is from Geoff Monks and features another industrial loco, an 0-6-0 saddle tank of the NCB. The loco was built in 1944 rebuilt in 1961. She is pictured in the shed at Mountain Ash on April 10th 1974 with the shed 'gaffer' proudly leaning against his charge.
To change the subject from steam, the final pic is from Jeff Nicholls. Pictured is class 37, 37901 Mirrlees Pioneer at Ramsbottom on the East Lancs Railway. The occasion was a Diesel Gala Weekend and the date, 2nd July 2011. The livery is BR grey, large logo.
