Steam at Shap and Ais Gill

This post, 8th October 2014, comprises twenty pics from six contrbutors including shots of steam locos in the Northern Fells.

WINWICK & ELSEWHERE

First up are four shots from David Wood. His first shows DRS class 57, 57307 Lady Penelope carrying the 'anti cable theft' slogan, working Crewe - Preston. The location was Winwick and the date, 7th October 2010.

EWS (DBS) class 66, 66201 is next, heading cement tanks through Winwick on 7th October 2014.

David's third shot features GBRf class 66, 66719 METRO-LAND on an Ironbridge - Seaforth Docks working on 7th October 2104.

One of the latest class 68s is the focus of David's fourth and final pic; 68014 is pictured at Winwick on a Carlisle Kingmoor TMD (DRS operated) - Crewe (DRS Gresty Bridge) working on 7th October 2014.

Jeff Nicholls has sent in the following five pics. First up are two pics of Stanier class '6P' 'Jubilee' class 4-6-0, No.45699 Galatea. The 'retro' mono representation was taken at Scout Green, Shap  on 5th October 2014.

The colour shot (left) was taken on the same date at Ais Gill and features the same LMS loco built in 1936. The loco was working the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' in both shots.

Also pictured on the same date was Stanier (rebuilt) class '7P' 'Royal Scot' class 4-6-0, No 46115 Scots Guardsman.  The location was Kirkby Stephen.

Jeff's fourth shot was of a Carlisle - Skipton service of Northern Rail - a class 158, 158 861 at Ais Gill summit on the same date, 5th October 2014.

The fifth and final shot from Jeff was taken at Red Bank at 06.50hrs on 27th September 2014. There was very little light and Jeff was using iso 3200 to get the shot. 'The Scottish Lowlander' was running Crewe - Dumfries with Stanier class '8P' 'Pacific' 4-6-2, No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland up front. WCRC class 47 47245 was on the tail as far as Carnforth. The train was hauled from Carlisle by Gresley 'Pacific' No.60009 Union of South Africa and on the return, from Carlisle to Carnforth by 46233; at Carnforth, Stanier' Jubilee' class 4-6-0 No.45699 Galatea, took over for the Crewe leg. This is a quite extraordinary shot from Jeff and shows what is possible in digital at such a high iso setting.

Alan Rigby is our third contributor. Taken on 3rd October 2014 at Earlestown, the pic shows DBS class 60, 60065 Spirit of JAGUAR with a LBT-FFPS loaded coal working

John Smith is next with three pics taken at St Helens Junction and Earlestown. St Helens Junction is the location for two pics, the first featuring WCRC class 57, 57313 (ex 'Thunderbird')  heading WCRC Inspection Saloon 999506 on 24th September 2014.

John's second pic shows the same working in reverse.

Taken near Earlestown on 3rd October 2014, this pic from John shows DBS class 60, 60054 on a Seaforth - Tinsley empty steel wagons working.

Four pics now follow from David Quayle's recent rip to the Severn Valley Railway. The first three were taken at Highley and the fourth at Bewdley. Pic one features a Collett 0-4-2, '1400' class tank loco No.1450 working with an autocoach on 19th September 2014.

On the same day and at the same location was this small, 2-6-2 prairie tank '4500' class, No.4566, with a passenger service.

Again - same day same location - BR 'Standard' class '5' 4-6-0, No.73129, the only surviving 'Standard' class '5' of British Railways, fitted with Caprotti valve gear.

David's final shot was taken at Bewdley on 18th September 2014. Class '1500' pannier tank 0-6-0 (with outside cylinders) No.1501 is pictured sporting a  'Footplate Experience' headboard. Although associated with the GWR the class of ten was actually built by BR Western Region in 1949.

The next trio are from myself and follow on from the previous post where I placed four pics from the NYMR. The three pics in this post are also from that Heritage Railway. The first features Stanier 'Black 5' 4-6-0 No 44806, in close up waiting at Grosmont with a passenger service to Pickering on 22nd September 2014.

My second shot is a cameo from Grosmont shed and shows class '24' Bo-Bo, D5061 in BR green livery and recently named Ian Johnson to the left of class '55' Deltic, 55002 King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (known affectionately as Koyli). The latter was seen at the previous NYMR Diesel Gala.

Finally, class 25, D7628 (25278) Sybilla is pictured passing under the road bridge just before arriving at Goathland with a passenger service from Pickering. The pic is dated 24th September 2014.
