First up are five shots from David Quayle's recent visit to the ELR Gala. The first shows two preserved Gresley, 'A4' class 'Streaks' -  60009 Union of South Africa (left) and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley (right). The pic is dated 18th October 2014 and was taken at Bury Baron Street.

Next is David's shot of Hughes/Fowler 2-6-0 'Crab', No.13065 (42765), under the bridge at Bury on 19th October 2014.

David's third shot features the same locomotive, light engine, at Bury on 18th October 2014.

David's next shot is of the Gresley 'K4' class 2-6-0, No.61994 The Great Marquess, with a passenger service, at Bury on 19th October 2014.

Finally, this shot by David features the same locomotive on a goods working at Irwell Vale on 18th October 2014.

David Wood has sent in the following four pics three of them taken on Anglesey. First up is is a Network Rail Treatment Train headed by class 97, 97304 John Tiley, taken at Llanfair on 25th October 2014.

This next shot shows the same working but in reverse. On the tail is class 97, 97302. The date is the same, 25th October 2014.

David's third pic was also taken at Llanfair and shows DRS class 37s, 37682 and 37419 Carl Haviland 1954-2012, heading the 'Welsh Warrior' Special on 25th October 2014.

The final shot from David was taken at Winwick on 20th October 2014. Pictured is Gresley 'A4' class 4-6-2 No.60009 Union of South Africa on a ELR-Southall working with support coach.

The two pics above are from Ieuan Wood. Pictured left is the 'Welsh Warrior' Special again as detailed above, but taken at Flint. Next from Ieuan is a a second shot (right) of No.61994 The Great Marquess - details above. This one was taken at Burrs on the ELR on 18th October 2014.

Jeff Nicholls has sent in the next three pics. His first was taken at Red Bank on 25th October 2014 and features the 'Appleby Explorer' Special headed by Stanier 'Princess Coronation' class 4-6-2 No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland.

Jeff's second shot was taken at Culcheth on 20th October 2014. Depicted is Gresley 'A4', No.60009 Union of South Africa with support coach, on an ELR - Southall working.

The same working, at the same location on the same day, is pictured next again from Jeff.

John Smith has sent in this one taken at Winwick on 20th October 2014. The same 'A4' loco and support, as above,  is shown again.

Finally a shot from myself of the 'Appleby Explorer' taken on 25th October 2014. I must have been on the other side of the track at Red Bank as Jeff Nicholls (see his shot above), but I didn't spot him. No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland at the head, in lousy light.

Mixed Traction - Steam & Diesel

A fine selection of mixed traction is on show in today's post 21st October 2014.

WINWICK & ELSEWHERE

First up are four pics from John Smith. His first features GBRf class 66, 66849 Wylam Dilly on the Carlisle-Chirk logs working. The location was Winwick and the date, 18th October 2014.

Next is John's shot of Freightliner 'PowerHaul' class 70, 70004 on a huge engineers train at Winwick. The working was Kirkham-Crewe and 70010 was on the tail. The pic is dated 19th October 2014.

Pic number three from John shows a convoy of 4 diesels en route from the SVR to the ELR on 8th October 2014. They were D9009 (55009) Alycidon; 50015 (D415) Valiant; 37109; 55019 Royal Higland Fusilier. The location was a backlit Earlestown.

John's fourth and final pic was taken at Broad Lane, Collins Green on 17th October 2014. Pictured is GBRf class 66, 66760 with an Ironbridge - Liverpool biomass working.

Next are five shots from David Quayle's excursions to Preserved Railways on both sides of the Pennines. First up is a shot of un-rebuilt Bulleid 'Pacific', 'WC' class, No.34092 City of Wells at Haworth on the K&WVR, on 11th October 2014. Ex BR class '8F' 'Austerity' No.90733 is behind with ex USA loco No.5823 last in this consist of three.

David's second shot features the same Bulleid 'Pacific' No.34092 at Keighley with two other locos in shot - ex LMS/BR, Fowler 0-6-0 class '4F'  No.43924 to the fore, and ex BR, WD (War Department) class  '8F' 'Austerity' 2-8-0, No.90733 in the background.

Shot number three from David shows Gresley 'A4' class 4-6-2 ('Streak') No.60009 Union of South Africa heading a Parcels Charter on the ELR at Ramsbottom. The pic is dated 15th October 2014.

David's next shot was also taken on the ELR on 15th October 2014. Pictured on the Brooksbottom Viaduct on the same Parcels Charter is No.60009 again.

The fifth and final shot from David was taken on 11th October 2014 at Keighley. The locomotive is ex USATC (United States Army Transportation Corps)  'S160' class 2-8-0, No.5820. The class of over 2,000, was designed for use in Europe during the Second World War. Over 400 were used in the UK to supplement home numbers and replace war-ravaged stock.

Another two from my recent NYMR visit now follow. The first shows Thompson 'B1' class 4-6-0, No.61264 masquerading as class member 61034 Chiru, passing Grosmont shed on 22nd September 2014. Gresley 'Streak' No.60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is in the background.

My second pic was also taken at Grosmont shed on the same date and shows Gresley 'A4' class 'Pacific' No.60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, standing above an inspection well at the coaling plant.

Ieuan Wood has sent in the following pair of pics. First up is the Gresley 'A4' No.60007 again, this one taken at Burrs on the ELR on 18th October 2014.

Taken at the same location on the same date is Ieuan's shot of the recently restored Hughes/Fowler 'Crab' No.13065 (42765). The class of 245, 2-6-0 ‘Crabs’ was built between 1926-1931.

Geoff Monk's shot of GBRf electro-diesel No.73961 (ex 73209, 73120, E6026) has been converted to a class 73/9 at the Brush Traction Works at Loughborough in 2014. The loco is undergoing tests on the GCR and resident class 31, D5830, is leading. The pic is dated 2nd October 2014.

Jeff Nicholls has provided the next four pics. Up first is DRS class 66, 66305 on the 'Tesco Express' at Winwick, on 8th October 2014. Normally a class 92 is associated with this working.

DBS (note the 'sticker') class 60 60065 Spirit of Jaguar is next pictured at Earlestown on 8th October 2014. The working was LBT - FFPS coal.

Next is Jeff's shot of Deltic class 55, D9009 (55009) Alycidon at Irwell Vale on the ELR. Jeff adds that the loco is runnung on one engine. The pic is dated 12th October 2014.

The same diesel consist described in John Smith's pic above is shown in Jeff's shot, this one at Culcheth on the same date, 8th October 2014 i.e. 55009, 50015, 37109 and 55019. This is another of Jeff's high iso shots taken in very low light (iso 3200).

Steam at Shap and Ais Gill

This post, 8th October 2014, comprises twenty pics from six contrbutors including shots of steam locos in the Northern Fells.

WINWICK & ELSEWHERE

First up are four shots from David Wood. His first shows DRS class 57, 57307 Lady Penelope carrying the 'anti cable theft' slogan, working Crewe - Preston. The location was Winwick and the date, 7th October 2010.

EWS (DBS) class 66, 66201 is next, heading cement tanks through Winwick on 7th October 2014.

David's third shot features GBRf class 66, 66719 METRO-LAND on an Ironbridge - Seaforth Docks working on 7th October 2104.

One of the latest class 68s is the focus of David's fourth and final pic; 68014 is pictured at Winwick on a Carlisle Kingmoor TMD (DRS operated) - Crewe (DRS Gresty Bridge) working on 7th October 2014.

Jeff Nicholls has sent in the following five pics. First up are two pics of Stanier class '6P' 'Jubilee' class 4-6-0, No.45699 Galatea. The 'retro' mono representation was taken at Scout Green, Shap  on 5th October 2014.

The colour shot (left) was taken on the same date at Ais Gill and features the same LMS loco built in 1936. The loco was working the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' in both shots.

Also pictured on the same date was Stanier (rebuilt) class '7P' 'Royal Scot' class 4-6-0, No 46115 Scots Guardsman.  The location was Kirkby Stephen.

Jeff's fourth shot was of a Carlisle - Skipton service of Northern Rail - a class 158, 158 861 at Ais Gill summit on the same date, 5th October 2014.

The fifth and final shot from Jeff was taken at Red Bank at 06.50hrs on 27th September 2014. There was very little light and Jeff was using iso 3200 to get the shot. 'The Scottish Lowlander' was running Crewe - Dumfries with Stanier class '8P' 'Pacific' 4-6-2, No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland up front. WCRC class 47 47245 was on the tail as far as Carnforth. The train was hauled from Carlisle by Gresley 'Pacific' No.60009 Union of South Africa and on the return, from Carlisle to Carnforth by 46233; at Carnforth, Stanier' Jubilee' class 4-6-0 No.45699 Galatea, took over for the Crewe leg. This is a quite extraordinary shot from Jeff and shows what is possible in digital at such a high iso setting.

Alan Rigby is our third contributor. Taken on 3rd October 2014 at Earlestown, the pic shows DBS class 60, 60065 Spirit of JAGUAR with a LBT-FFPS loaded coal working

John Smith is next with three pics taken at St Helens Junction and Earlestown. St Helens Junction is the location for two pics, the first featuring WCRC class 57, 57313 (ex 'Thunderbird')  heading WCRC Inspection Saloon 999506 on 24th September 2014.

John's second pic shows the same working in reverse.

Taken near Earlestown on 3rd October 2014, this pic from John shows DBS class 60, 60054 on a Seaforth - Tinsley empty steel wagons working.

Four pics now follow from David Quayle's recent rip to the Severn Valley Railway. The first three were taken at Highley and the fourth at Bewdley. Pic one features a Collett 0-4-2, '1400' class tank loco No.1450 working with an autocoach on 19th September 2014.

On the same day and at the same location was this small, 2-6-2 prairie tank '4500' class, No.4566, with a passenger service.

Again - same day same location - BR 'Standard' class '5' 4-6-0, No.73129, the only surviving 'Standard' class '5' of British Railways, fitted with Caprotti valve gear.

David's final shot was taken at Bewdley on 18th September 2014. Class '1500' pannier tank 0-6-0 (with outside cylinders) No.1501 is pictured sporting a  'Footplate Experience' headboard. Although associated with the GWR the class of ten was actually built by BR Western Region in 1949.

The next trio are from myself and follow on from the previous post where I placed four pics from the NYMR. The three pics in this post are also from that Heritage Railway. The first features Stanier 'Black 5' 4-6-0 No 44806, in close up waiting at Grosmont with a passenger service to Pickering on 22nd September 2014.

My second shot is a cameo from Grosmont shed and shows class '24' Bo-Bo, D5061 in BR green livery and recently named Ian Johnson to the left of class '55' Deltic, 55002 King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (known affectionately as Koyli). The latter was seen at the previous NYMR Diesel Gala.

Finally, class 25, D7628 (25278) Sybilla is pictured passing under the road bridge just before arriving at Goathland with a passenger service from Pickering. The pic is dated 24th September 2014.
